Trade promotion management for logistics and distribution companies
In short
Logistics and distribution companies also give their clients commercial terms: volume discounts, bonuses on turnover, individual price lists and promotions to win or keep a contract. Trade promotion management puts these terms, their budgets and their settlement into one process. Remanently Trade Marketing supports budgets, price lists, turnover, promotions and bonuses with thresholds. A company can start with one region or one client group and expand after the first period is settled.
The situation before adoption
When people think of trade promotions they think of shelves and brands. But a logistics or distribution company also gives commercial terms. A freight client receives a volume discount once shipments pass a threshold. A distribution client gets an individual price list. A new contract is won with a promotional rate for the first quarter. Each is a commercial term with a cost, and each needs to be settled.
- Terms in contracts and emails. A rate card, an addendum and a promise from a sales call, each kept by a different person.
- Individual prices. Key clients work on their own price lists, and the current version is not always the one used for invoicing.
- Volume bonuses by hand. Thresholds on shipments, revenue or volume are checked after the period in a spreadsheet.
- Groups of clients. Related companies under one master agreement, while sales are recorded per entity.
- Promotional offers without review. A discount to win a client stays in place after the reason for it is gone.
- Budget not visible. The company knows its target margin, but not how much of it the terms have already consumed.
The result is a margin that is lower than the rate card suggests, with no single place to see why.
How the process looks with the module
Remanently Trade Marketing follows the order in which commercial terms are created and used.
- Budget. Decide how much can be spent on terms, by organization, region or client.
- Price lists. Keep central and individual price lists, with Excel import.
- Terms. Record percentage and value discounts, free goods and bonuses with thresholds.
- Assignment. Assign clients and products or services to each term.
- Turnover. Import sales data.
- Settlement. Conditions and tiers are calculated from the data.
- Result. Reports compare the cost of terms with sales and show profitability.
Bonuses can depend on turnover, volume or purchase mix. Umbrella bonuses in the extended scope handle a master agreement covering several entities. How a particular service offer, such as a rate card or a contract tier, is represented is best checked in a demo on your own data.
What changes for each role
Sales manager
The sales manager sees which terms each client has, how close the client is to a threshold and what an offer will cost before it is made. When a client asks for better rates, the discussion starts from the cost of the current terms. See bonus for purchase structure for how to design thresholds.
Finance
Finance gets a calculated settlement and a view of how much of the budget is used. Instead of assembling a bonus per client from several sources, the team checks the calculation. The discipline of tracking cost against plan is covered in trade spend management.
Director
The director can compare clients on profitability after terms, not only on revenue. A large client with several bonus layers may look different once the total cost is in view. That supports contract renewals with facts.
Typical questions and where they are answered
| Question | Where it is answered |
|---|---|
| What terms does this client have now? | Terms assigned to the client, with attachments and documentation |
| Which clients will reach the next volume tier? | Bonus thresholds, automatic calculation of fulfillment |
| How much of the terms budget is left? | Budgets by organization, region or client |
| Did the introductory offer pay off? | Reports on cost, target fulfillment and profitability |
| What does the master agreement cost across entities? | Umbrella promotions and bonuses |
How to start in one region
- Pick one region or one client group. Choose clients with volume bonuses or individual prices, since they benefit most.
- Collect the terms. Rate cards, individual price lists, bonus conditions and which entities they cover.
- Write each condition in one sentence. Who, what, which period, which threshold, what rate.
- Import turnover. Start from Excel.
- Settle one period. Compare the system result with your manual figures and explain the differences.
- Extend. Add regions and client groups after the first cycle.
The wording of agreements is on volume rebate agreement. To choose a structure for client incentives, see rebate on total volume or on growth. The process in general is described on trade promotion management, and the software view on trade promotion management software.
Why discipline matters in a thin-margin business
Logistics and distribution run on margins where a one-point change is visible in the annual result. A client discount that was meant for one quarter and stayed for two years is a standing cost. A volume bonus calculated on the wrong base is a payment that should not have been made, or a dispute that will not go away.
The remedy is not complicated. Every term has an owner, a start date, an end or review date, a budget line and a settlement method. A term without a review date is a standing term by default. Reviewing terms on a fixed schedule, with the cost and the result of each in front of you, is how a company keeps the discount it chose to give and drops the one it only forgot.

Frequently asked questions
Do logistics companies need trade promotion management?
If you give clients volume discounts, bonuses, individual price lists or introductory offers, you have commercial terms with a cost. Managing them in one process makes the cost and the result visible.
Can individual client price lists be kept alongside a central list?
Yes. Remanently Trade Marketing supports central and individual price lists, and price lists and turnover can be imported from Excel.
Can a master agreement cover several client companies?
Umbrella promotions and umbrella bonuses in the extended scope cover several related entities, so the combined result is checked against a condition.
Where should a logistics company start?
With one region or one client group with volume bonuses or individual prices. Collect the terms, import turnover and settle one period.
Are clients counted as paid users?
No. Users in a package are the people managing the process. Customers, partners and distributors taking part in promotions are not automatically additional paid users.
