Establish the receiving unit

A piece, carton and pallet represent different quantities. If a supplier delivers outer packs while the warehouse issues individual items, an agreed conversion is essential. An error here affects both availability and picking later.

Check the product variant as well. A similar name or familiar packaging does not establish that the correct SKU has arrived.

Capture information that will be harder to recover

Batch number, expiry date and delivery condition are easiest to establish at receipt. After unpacking and putaway, tracing an error may require checking several locations and documents.

Not every product needs the same data. The checks should reflect what will matter during storage, issue, return or investigation of a customer complaint.

Receipt needs a location record

A quantity without a location is not enough for the person collecting the goods later. If the delivery is waiting in the receiving area, that should be visible. Once put away, its actual destination needs confirmation.

For a warehouse manager, this reduces situations where stock exists in the system but employees have to search for it. WMS can connect delivery identification with putaway. Reliable information still depends on defining what the operator confirms and at which point.
