Start from the last reliable point

Review receipts, picks and transfers since agreement was last established. Use a specific product, location and correct unit.

A wrong packaging conversion, unrecorded issue and move to another shelf can produce similar figures. Each needs a different explanation.

Retain the cause as well as the change

“Adjustment after count” describes the occasion, not its source. If the cause is unknown, say so and assign further investigation.

Do not substitute an unexplained quantity change for a missing document. History should show what was verified and the basis for correction.

Check whether the action worked

Revisit a similar scope after changing receiving or picking rules. Continued differences can mean the original explanation covered only part of the events.

For accounting and analytics, a correct total and an understandable reason both matter. WMS retains movement history, helping turn an adjustment from routine number matching into the start of a specific improvement. The later review provides evidence of whether that improvement addressed the actual process problem.
