The current record is only part of the information

Today's assignment does not show previous users or the reason for a change. Documents carrying an old identifier may remain in the previous system even after the asset moves to the new register.

Migration therefore includes relationships and access to earlier information. Not everything needs the same format, but information that people need should remain findable.

An archive or a full transfer?

Some history can move into the new system while other records remain in an organised archive. Both approaches need a connection to the asset identifier and readable documents.

Dates also matter. The import date should not stand in for the date of an actual handover. Otherwise, migration creates a misleading sequence of events.

Preserved history supports future management

Reconstructing several real cases tells more than an import-success message. Users should still be able to find the purchase, reassignment and repair. The new application can then build on existing asset knowledge rather than starting it again.
